How long should an explainer video be? 1, 3 or 10 minutes

Updated October 2026

As short as the idea allows. A 1-minute video suits one simple point; 3 minutes gives room for a how or why with a few steps; 10 minutes suits a topic with several parts. These are editorial lengths, not Creator’s target choices: its planner offers 3, 5, 8, 12 or 15 minutes, defaulting to 8. Its maximum video quote reserves drawing credits for the selected target even if your own script is shorter.

Creator pricing and target clarification: 8 November 2026. Guidance on length is judgment, not survey data; check your own audience retention where your platform shows it.

Length is the first decision in an explainer, because it sets the word count, the number of scenes and the price. The honest rule is to take the time the idea needs and stop.

The three lengths

Length Words (at 140 to 160 per minute) Best for Trade-off
1 minute about 140 to 160 One point, one answer No room for steps or nuance
3 minutes about 420 to 480 A how or why with a few steps Needs a clear structure to hold attention
10 minutes about 1,400 to 1,600 A topic with several parts, for a viewer who chose to learn it Costs more, and every weak minute is a place to lose people

The words-per-minute range is a rule of thumb for narration; time your own read-aloud. The free script checker counts your words and estimates speaking time at a pace you choose. It is a preparation aid, not a finished-video duration or credit quote.

1 minute

Good for a single question with a single answer. The hook and the answer must come almost at once, and there is little space for caveats, so claims need to be simple and solid. A short draft is also quick to check; it does not imply a 1-minute Creator target or a fixed price.

3 minutes

The common middle: enough time for a problem, three or so steps and a recap. Most topics that are “how does X work?” fit here. Keep one idea per scene, as in the script guide.

10 minutes

Worth it when the subject has distinct parts and the viewer came to learn rather than scroll. It puts more weight on structure (signpost where you are), and more claims means more fact-checking. Consider whether two 3 to 5 minute videos would serve better.

What length costs in Kadapt Creator

Creator offers 3, 5, 8, 12 or 15-minute targets, defaulting to 8. These are planner choices, distinct from the finished lengths discussed above.

The video quote is a maximum based on the selected target and the planned beats. It includes planning at 18 credits, narration rounded up from 0.3 credits per beat, and a drawing reserve at 4 credits per started target minute. That reserve still uses the selected target when your own script is shorter. You need the full quoted balance to start.

Actual drawing settlement uses frame-rounded finished duration at 4 credits per started minute, capped at the reserve; any difference is returned. A shorter finished video can therefore cost less than the maximum, but trimming a script does not lower the upfront reserve. Optional research is separate: 6 credits per started target minute, charged before the video quote.

Starter is $14.99 for 200 credits; see pricing and the cost guide. If you start from an existing article, the blog-post flow shows the steps.

How to choose

Write the one-sentence promise of the video. If it fits one sentence with no “and”, aim for 1 minute. If it needs a short sequence, 3. If it is a course in miniature, consider 10, or split it. Then check retention on your platform and adjust the next one.

Common questions

Is there an ideal explainer video length?

No single number fits every topic. The right length is the time the idea needs and no more. Your platform's audience-retention graph, if it has one, will show where real viewers stop watching.

How is length priced in Kadapt Creator?

Planning is 18 credits per video, narration is rounded up from 0.3 credits per beat, and drawing is 4 credits per started minute. Optional research costs 6 credits per started target minute, charged separately before the video quote. Starter is $14.99 per month for 200 credits. The video quote is a maximum based on your selected duration and script beats. Its drawing reserve uses the selected target even with a shorter own script, and you need the full quoted balance to start. The final drawing charge is based on the finished video duration, capped at that reserve; any difference is returned.

What lengths does Creator make?

Creator offers 3, 5, 8, 12 or 15-minute targets, with 8 selected by default. Finished duration can differ from the selected target. A 1-minute or 10-minute editorial length is not a selectable planner target.

Does cutting a script down save money?

A shorter finished video can reduce actual drawing settlement, but shortening your own script does not reduce the target-based drawing reserve or the full balance needed to start. Optional research is based on the selected target, not a later script trim. Cut what the viewer does not need.
