Best AI explainer video makers compared: Synthesia, Kadapt Creator, Pictory and InVideo
Updated October 2026
The tools make different kinds of explainer. Synthesia puts an AI presenter on screen, Kadapt Creator turns a script you approve into a hand-drawn-style explainer with a host character, Pictory turns a script or article into stock-footage video, and InVideo generates videos from a prompt with an AI agent. Pick by the look you want and by how you want to pay: monthly minutes, or a selected-target credit reserve plus separate research.
Synthesia, InVideo and Pictory prices were read from synthesia.io/pricing, invideo.io/pricing and pictory.ai/pricing on 29 October 2026; Kadapt's from kadapt.com/pricing the same day. “AI explainer video maker” covers four different products. The useful question is not which is best, but which kind of explainer you want to put your name on.
The four at a glance
| Tool | What the video looks like | How it is priced (public pages, 29 Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Synthesia | An AI presenter speaking to camera | Free plan (10 min); Starter $19 a month ($14 annual); Pro $89 ($59 annual) |
| Kadapt Creator | Hand-drawn-style scenes with a host character, from a script you approve | Selected-target maximum video reserve; full quoted balance required; research separate; Starter $14.99/month for 200 credits |
| Pictory | Your script or article cut to stock footage and captions | Starter $29 a month ($25 annual, up to 30 min); Professional $59 ($35 annual, up to 90 min); 14-day trial |
| InVideo | Prompt-to-video through an AI agent, with generated clips | Team plans from $10 per seat a month billed annually, credit-based |
Plan sizes are not directly comparable: two vendors sell minutes, two sell credits, and what a credit buys differs by tool. Compare by the cost of one finished video of the length you actually publish.
Synthesia: when a face is the point
Synthesia is built around a presenter avatar. Its public plans include a free tier and paid plans metered in video minutes. If a talking person on screen is what makes the video credible, such as onboarding, training or announcements, this is the category.
Kadapt Creator: when you want a drawn explainer
Kadapt Creator plans scenes from a script you approve, voices them and draws them in a hand-drawn style with a host character.
Creator offers 3, 5, 8, 12 or 15-minute planner targets (8 minutes by default). The video quote is a maximum reserve based on the selected target, even when your script is shorter. You need the full quoted credit balance to start. Final drawing charges use finished video duration, capped at the reserve; any difference is returned.
Planning is 18 credits, narration is 0.3 × the beat count rounded up to whole credits, and drawing is 4 credits per started minute. Optional research is charged separately, before the video quote, at 6 credits per started minute of the selected target. Starter remains $14.99 a month for 200 credits. See the cost guide for the breakdown and the Creator page for pricing and three finished examples.
Creator has no realistic presenter and is not the right tool for a brand film with bespoke characters.
Pictory: when you already have the words
Pictory takes a script, blog post or long recording and assembles stock footage, captions and voiceover around it. It suits repurposing text into video fast. The look is stock footage, so it works best where the footage is incidental to the message.
InVideo: when you want to start from a prompt
InVideo’s plans are credit-based and organised around AI agents that generate clips from a description. It suits people who would rather describe a video than write a script, and who are comfortable with generated footage varying from clip to clip.
How to choose
Choose by the look first: presenter, stock footage, generated clips or hand-drawn. Then check the unit you pay in against how many videos you will publish a month. And whichever tool you pick, the script decides whether the video holds attention. Our script guide and the fact-checking guide apply to all four.
Common questions
Which AI explainer video maker is cheapest?
It depends on how you publish. Synthesia lists a free plan (10 minutes of video a month) and paid plans from $19 a month ($14 billed annually). Pictory lists $29 a month ($25 annually) with a 14-day trial. InVideo lists team plans from $10 per seat a month billed annually. Kadapt Starter is $14.99 a month for 200 credits. Creator quotes a maximum video reserve based on your selected target, even for a shorter script; you need the full quoted balance to start. Final drawing charges use finished video duration, capped at the reserve, and the difference is returned. Optional research costs 6 credits per started minute of the selected target, charged separately before the video quote.
Do any of them draw the visuals instead of using stock footage?
Kadapt Creator draws a hand-drawn-style scene for each beat of your script with a host character. The others lean on a presenter avatar (Synthesia), stock footage (Pictory) or generated clips (InVideo). Which suits you is a matter of look, not quality.
Can I use my own script?
Yes in all four cases, and it is usually the better route: you control the facts. Kadapt Creator also offers to research a topic and draft a script for 6 credits per started minute of the selected target, charged separately before the video quote; read it before you approve, because any AI-written script can be wrong.
Do I need to check an AI-written script before publishing?
Yes. Whichever tool you use, check names, numbers and claims against a source you trust. Our guide to fact-checking an AI-written script walks through it.
