Question

How many photos does a listing reel need, and in what order?

Updated October 2026

A listing reel needs as many photos as its length can hold at a readable pace, and in Kadapt’s Photo Reel mode each photo gets at least 2 seconds, so a 15-second reel holds up to seven photos, a 20-second reel ten and a 30-second reel fifteen. Fewer, better photos beat a full set squeezed in. Open with your strongest photo, then walk through the main rooms, the bedrooms and baths, the outdoor space, and close on an exterior.

Agents usually ask this after the shoot, when there are forty photos and a reel that has to be short. The answer is arithmetic first, then taste.

Start with the length

In Kadapt’s Photo Reel mode, each photo is on screen for at least 2 seconds. So the reel length caps the photo count:

Reel length Most photos at 2 seconds each
15 seconds 7
20 seconds 10
30 seconds 15

That is a ceiling, not a target. Giving the best photos 3 or 4 seconds often reads better than fitting the maximum. Pick the length first (see how long a listing reel should be), then choose photos to fit it.

Photo Reel or AI Video

Kadapt offers two modes, chosen on the Photos step before you upload:

  • Photo Reel animates your stills. What the viewer sees is your photos, with movement added, so the count and order you pick are what appears.
  • AI Video generates motion from your photos. It is a different look, so decide which you want before choosing the length.

Either way, a reel is not walkthrough footage and should not be presented as one. For the wider picture, see making listing video from MLS photos.

A hook-first order

Walk the viewer through the property the way a visitor would, after one strong opening:

  1. Hook: your strongest photo. Often the front exterior, the kitchen, or a standout feature such as a view, pool or fireplace, if the property really has one.
  2. Main rooms: entry, living room, kitchen and dining.
  3. Private spaces: primary bedroom and bath, then other bedrooms and baths.
  4. Outdoor space and extras: yard, deck, patio, garage or other amenities included in the sale.
  5. Close: a twilight or wide exterior if you have one.

With fewer photos, drop from the bottom of that list: details and extra bedrooms go first. The free reel shot order planner does this for you: choose the photo count, the length and the hook, and it returns an order with seconds per photo and a list you can copy. Nothing you choose is sent or stored.

Make sure the photos exist before you plan

A reel can only use what was shot. If you are planning the shoot, the free listing photo shot list gives a room-by-room list by property type, and how to photograph a listing covers technique. Ask for a few frames with room to crop to a tall shape, since reels are vertical.

Check before you upload

  • Every photo is of the property itself and is one you have the right to use. Check your photography agreement if you are unsure.
  • Nothing in the set shows people or personal items; the reel is about the home.
  • You approve the plan in Kadapt before it renders, so reorder there if the sequence feels wrong.

Describe the home, not who it is for, and use the same approach for every listing.

Common questions

What is the minimum time per photo in a reel?

In Kadapt’s Photo Reel mode each photo gets at least 2 seconds, which is about the shortest a viewer can take in a room. That sets the maximum: a 15-second reel fits seven photos, 20 seconds fits ten and 30 seconds fits fifteen.

Should I use every photo from the shoot?

Usually not. The listing page can carry the full set; a reel is a short taste of it. Pick the photos that show the layout and the best features, and leave out near-duplicates and weak angles.

What is the difference between Photo Reel and AI Video?

Photo Reel animates your still photos: each one gets camera movement for a set time. AI Video generates motion from the photos instead. You choose the mode and the length on the Photos step, before you upload.

Which photo should come first?

Your strongest one, because it is the frame a viewer sees before deciding whether to keep watching. For many homes that is the front exterior or the kitchen; if there is a view, pool or fireplace worth stopping for, lead with it. Use only a photo of the property that you would stand behind.
