Moving cost calculator

Plan the move alongside your closing costs. Compare hourly movers, a flat quote or a DIY truck rental, then print a budget with the extras included. These are your figures, not a market-price prediction. Everything you enter stays in your browser.

Default amounts illustrate the arithmetic. Replace them with your quotes. Set extras to zero when already included.

A planning budget, not a moving-company quote.

MOVING BUDGET
Additional costs
Planning budget only. Based on your inputs; sample amounts are not market rates. Ask movers for written estimates, check what is included, and avoid counting the same charge twice. Closing costs and deposits are separate.

Three ways to budget a move

Hourly movers: crew rate × billable hours. Flat quote: use the written estimate and add only excluded costs. DIY: rental days × daily rate, plus mileage, fuel and loading help. Fuel = driving miles ÷ miles per gallon × price per gallon.

Add packing, access charges, storage, your travel and other costs. Contingency is the subtotal × the percentage you choose. For example, 5 hours at $150 plus $100 of supplies gives $850 before contingency and $935 with a 10% buffer. The buffer is your planning choice, not a promise about the final bill.

Before you book movers

Ask what the quote includes: packing, stairs, long carries, parking, travel time, storage, valuation coverage and taxes. For a US interstate move, check the mover’s registration and get a written estimate. See FMCSA’s Protect Your Move and its guidance on unexpected moving costs.

Keep the rest of the home budget separate

This sheet does not calculate closing costs, deposits, new furniture or utility setup unless you put them in Other costs. Use the closing cost estimator for the home purchase, and the moving checklist for the tasks. Browse all free real estate tools.

Questions

How does this moving cost calculator work?

Choose hourly movers, a flat moving quote or a DIY truck rental. Add packing, access charges, storage, travel and other costs, then a contingency percentage. All amounts are your own planning figures; the defaults are examples, not local market rates.

Is the hourly rate per mover or for the whole crew?

It is the hourly rate for the whole crew and truck together. Multiply the billable hours, including any travel time billed by your mover, by that rate. Add any separate call-out or travel charge only if it is not included already.

What belongs in a DIY moving budget?

Include the truck rental for all days, mileage charges, fuel, hired loading help, supplies, storage and your own travel. Fuel is distance divided by miles per gallon, multiplied by price per gallon. Enter the full driving distance, including a return trip if needed.

Is this a moving-company quote?

No. This is a budget from the amounts you enter. For an interstate US move, ask the mover for a written estimate and check its registration with FMCSA. Weight, inventory, access, extra services and the contract affect the final price.

Can I print the budget and does Kadapt save it?

Print or save a PDF, download a PNG, or copy the summary. Your form entries stay in this browser and are not sent or saved by Kadapt. Analytics count button actions without the form contents.
