What makes a good open house directional sign

A directional sign is read in a second or two, usually from a moving car or at a walking pace, so it has one job: say “open house” and show which way to go. That is why this one uses two huge words, a single oversized arrow and a short date and time line. Anything else competes with the arrow. Contrast matters more than style, so the themes pair dark on light or light on dark with no mid-tones.

Where to put the signs

  • Put one at each turn between the nearest busy road and the house, plus one at the house itself.
  • Place each sign before the turn, not at it, so drivers have time to slow down and read it.
  • Face the sign towards oncoming traffic and keep it clear of parked cars, bushes and glare.
  • Walk or drive the route once from the main road to check that every turn has a sign and every arrow points the right way.
  • Take the signs in when the open house ends; a sign for a finished event is the quickest way to annoy a neighbour.

Check local rules first

Rules on temporary directional signs vary widely. Some places limit the size and number of signs, the hours they may be out, or where they may stand, and many ban them on public land, medians and utility poles. HOAs and brokerages often add their own rules, such as required branding or licence details. This tool makes the artwork only and cannot tell you what is permitted where you are, so check with your council, HOA and brokerage before you print.

Printing tips

  • Choose the paper size first, then print at 100% scale. Letter and A4 suit a window or a small stake sign; A3 and Tabloid are easier to read from a car.
  • For a larger sign, save as a PDF and ask a print shop to enlarge it; the artwork is vector, so it stays sharp.
  • Heavy white or bright paper gives the best colour. Mount on foam board or corrugated plastic, and laminate or sleeve it for rain.
  • Black on yellow is the easiest to read from a distance and the cheapest in toner if you print on yellow paper; the navy and green themes use more ink.
  • Use the PNG to post the sign online or send it to a print shop that asks for an image.

Common questions

Is the open house sign maker really free?

Yes. There is no signup and no watermark. The sign is built in your browser and you print it, save it as a PDF through the print dialog, or download it as a PNG image.

Does Kadapt see the details I type?

No. The date, time, name and phone number are used only to draw the sign on your own screen. They are not sent to Kadapt, stored, or used in analytics. The only thing counted is that someone pressed print or download.

What paper sizes does it support?

US Letter (8.5 × 11 in), A4 (210 × 297 mm), A3 (297 × 420 mm) and Tabloid (11 × 17 in), in portrait or landscape. The sign is vector artwork, so it stays sharp when you print it large. For a bigger sign than your printer handles, save it as a PDF and take it to a print shop.

Which way should the arrow point?

Point it the way a driver or walker should go from where the sign stands: the arrow shows the direction of travel as someone looks at the sign. Stand where the sign will go, look at the next turn, and choose left, right, straight ahead or back. Test it by walking up to the sign from the main road.

Can I put a directional sign on a street corner?

It depends. Many councils, HOAs and states limit temporary directional signs: where they can stand, how large they can be, what hours they may be out, and whether they need a permit. Some forbid them on public land or utility poles. This tool makes the artwork only; check your local rules and brokerage policy before you put signs out.

Should I add my name and phone number?

Both are optional. Many agents add them so neighbours and passers-by know who is hosting; some brokerages require a name or licence details on signs. Add what your brokerage and local rules ask for. Leave a field blank and that line is left off the sign.

What is the best way to print a sign for outdoors?

Print on bright, heavy paper, then mount it on foam board or corrugated plastic. Paper alone goes limp in rain or wind, so laminate it or slip it into a clear sleeve if the weather is uncertain. High-contrast themes such as black on yellow read best from a moving car.
